Visitor Insurance for Parents of OPT Students in USA — 2026 Guide

Updated April 2026 · 7 min read · Tower Hill Travel Insurance

Important: Your Child's Insurance Does NOT Cover You

  • OPT employer-provided insurance covers only the employee — not visiting parents
  • University health plans cover enrolled students only — not parents visiting from abroad
  • Your home country health insurance has zero coverage in the USA
  • You must purchase your own visitor insurance before or immediately after arriving

Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 international students to work in the USA for up to 12 months after graduation (or up to 36 months under STEM OPT extension). Many OPT holders work at US tech companies, research institutions, hospitals, and corporations across major metro areas.

When proud parents from India, China, Nigeria, or anywhere else fly to the US to visit their OPT child, they often assume their child's health coverage somehow extends to them. It does not. This guide explains exactly what coverage your parents need and which plans work best.

Why OPT and University Health Insurance Doesn't Cover Parents

There are two common scenarios for an OPT student's health coverage:

Scenario 1: Employer-Provided Health Insurance (Common in Tech/Corporate OPT)

Many OPT students working at tech companies (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc.) receive employer health insurance (typically through Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, or Kaiser). These plans cover the employee and optionally their spouse and dependent children who are US residents or legal immigrants.

Parents visiting from abroad are not considered dependents under US employer health insurance. They have no coverage.

Scenario 2: University Health Plan (Students on Academic OPT or Retained Enrollment)

Some universities allow students to retain university health coverage during their OPT period. University health plans (Student Health Services, university-affiliated insurance) cover only the enrolled student — not visiting parents or family members.

Even if your child kept their university plan, it covers only them. You need separate visitor insurance.

Where OPT Students Live — And Why It Matters

OPT students concentrate in high-cost metropolitan areas where their employers are headquartered. These are exactly the markets with the most expensive healthcare systems in the country:

OPT Hub CityER Visit (Uninsured Avg.)3-Day Hospital Stay (Avg.)
San Francisco Bay Area$6,000–$18,000$60,000–$120,000
New York City$5,500–$16,000$55,000–$115,000
Seattle, WA$4,500–$13,000$50,000–$100,000

OPT Parent Visit: Common Situations and Coverage

Situation: Parents visiting for 2–4 weeks (short graduation celebration visit)

Recommendation: Trawick Safe Travels USA with $500 deductible and $100K limit. Cost: ~$50–$80 for the trip. Good value for healthy parents on a short trip.

Situation: Parents staying 3–6 months (extended family visit, helping with household)

Recommendation: IMG Patriot America Plus with $250 deductible and $100K–$250K limit. Buy the full 6-month period upfront — easier to extend than to rebuy with a new waiting period.

Situation: Elderly parents (70+) with diabetes or hypertension

Recommendation: WorldTrips Atlas America with $100K–$500K limit and $0–$100 deductible. The $50,000 acute onset pre-existing condition limit is critical. Don't compromise here.

Situation: Parent visiting multiple children in different cities (OPT student + green card holder)

Recommendation: Any comprehensive plan — all three major plans cover the traveler nationally regardless of city. One policy covers visits to San Francisco, New York, and anywhere in between.
