Common Questions

Before You Buy

Answers to the questions we hear most from travelers like you.

Which plan is right for me?
It depends on your situation. If you're visiting the U.S. from another country, "Visitors to USA Insurance" is the most common choice. If you're traveling to Europe and need a visa, you'll need Schengen coverage. Students and J-1 visa holders have dedicated plans that meet school or government requirements. Our free quote tool asks a few simple questions and shows you only the plans that fit.
How quickly does coverage start?
In most cases, your policy is effective the next day or the date you specify when purchasing. You'll receive your policy documents and ID card by email instantly after purchase — no waiting period for new policies (waiting periods only apply if you're switching from an existing active policy).
Can I get covered if I have pre-existing conditions?
Yes — many of our plans include "acute onset" coverage for pre-existing conditions. This means if your condition flares up unexpectedly, you're covered for emergency treatment. Some plans also offer more comprehensive pre-existing condition coverage. During the quote process, you can filter specifically for these plans.
What if my trip is longer than expected?
Most plans are renewable. If you need to stay longer than originally planned, you can extend your coverage before it expires — directly from your policy documents or by contacting our support team. There's no penalty for extending, and coverage is continuous with no gap.
Are your plans accepted at US hospitals?
Yes. Our carrier partners (IMG, Trawick International, WorldTrips) are all A-rated and widely accepted. For non-emergency care, you'll typically use a preferred provider network (PPO). For emergencies, you can go to any hospital — you pay out of pocket and file for reimbursement, or many facilities will bill the insurer directly once you provide your insurance ID.
How much does travel insurance cost?
Visitor insurance typically starts at $1.10–$2/day for younger travelers and rises to $5–$15/day for travelers 65+. A 30-day plan for a healthy adult in their 40s with $100,000 coverage generally costs $40–$80. Schengen visa insurance for a 2-week trip runs $25–$60. Premiums depend on age, coverage amount, deductible, and trip length — run a free quote in under 2 minutes to see exact pricing.
What is the difference between visitors insurance and trip insurance?
Visitors insurance (travel medical insurance) primarily covers emergency medical costs — hospital stays, doctor visits, emergency evacuation. Trip insurance (travel protection) covers the financial investment of your trip — cancellations, interruptions, delayed baggage, and travel delays. Visitors to the USA usually only need visitors insurance. Americans going on a cruise or international vacation often benefit from both.
Can I buy travel insurance after I've already left home?
Yes — you can purchase visitor insurance after departure in most cases, including after you've already arrived in the USA. There is typically a short waiting period (48–72 hours) before illness coverage starts; accident coverage usually begins immediately. We recommend buying before travel when possible to ensure full coverage from day one.
Do I need travel insurance if I have Medicare or my home country's health plan?
Yes. Medicare does not cover medical care outside the United States. For visitors arriving in the USA, your foreign government health plan almost certainly won't cover US medical costs — which are among the highest in the world. A single ER visit can cost $2,000–$10,000 without insurance.
What should I do if I have a medical emergency while traveling?
Call your insurer's 24/7 emergency assistance line immediately — the number is on your insurance ID card. For life-threatening emergencies, go directly to the nearest ER and notify your insurer as soon as possible. Your insurer can coordinate care, arrange direct billing with the hospital, and if needed, organize medical evacuation back home. Always keep your insurance ID card accessible.
