Travel Insurance With Chronic Pain

Coverage options for travelers managing chronic pain conditions — including fibromyalgia, neuropathy, and complex regional pain syndrome.

Overview

Chronic pain conditions — including fibromyalgia, chronic back pain, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and neuropathy — affect approximately 50 million Americans. Visitor insurance is available to chronic pain patients without affecting premiums. The critical distinction is between emergency-level acute pain events (covered) and ongoing pain management (not covered).

⚠️

Stability Clause Requirement

Plans require chronic pain conditions to be stable for 60–180 days: no new pain medications, no dosage changes, no new procedures (nerve blocks, epidurals, spinal cord stimulator programming), and no pain-related hospitalizations. Ongoing stable pain management medications at unchanged doses are permitted.

What's Covered

Acute Underlying Cause Emergency

If chronic pain is caused by a structural condition (herniated disc, spinal stenosis) that suddenly worsens acutely — requiring emergency imaging and intervention — the acute event may be covered.

Emergency Treatment for New Acute Injury

A new injury (fall, accident) in a chronic pain patient is covered as a standard emergency medical event, separate from the pre-existing pain condition.

Acute Neuropathic Crisis

Sudden, severe neuropathic crisis requiring emergency evaluation — particularly in patients with CRPS — may qualify as an acute onset event.

Emergency Medical Evacuation

Transport to an appropriate pain specialty center if a pain emergency cannot be managed locally.

What's Not Covered

  • Routine pain management appointments, pain clinic visits, or procedures
  • Ongoing prescription pain medications (opioids, gabapentin, duloxetine)
  • Scheduled nerve blocks, epidurals, or spinal cord stimulator adjustments
  • Physical therapy for chronic pain management
  • Alternative pain treatments (acupuncture, chiropractic, TENS therapy)

Cost Note

Chronic pain diagnoses do not affect premiums. Rates are entirely age-based — typically $1.00–$5.00/day depending on age.
