Overview

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are serious, life-threatening conditions. Long-haul flights are a known DVT risk factor for all travelers — and particularly elevated for those with a DVT history. A pulmonary embolism abroad without insurance can cost $50,000–$200,000 to treat and evacuate. Coverage is available, but the stability clause is strictly applied.

⚠️

Stability Clause Requirement

Plans require DVT/PE history to be stable for 60–180 days: no new clots, no change in anticoagulant therapy (warfarin, Eliquis, Xarelto, Pradaxa), no new procedure (IVC filter, thrombectomy), and no new DVT-related symptoms. Ongoing stable anticoagulation at unchanged doses is permitted.

What's Covered

Acute Pulmonary Embolism Emergency

A new, sudden PE requiring emergency treatment — tPA thrombolysis, anticoagulation initiation, or surgical thrombectomy — is potentially covered under acute onset if the DVT history was stable.

Acute New DVT in a Different Location

A new DVT in a different anatomical location than prior clots may qualify as a new acute medical event — confirm with your insurer.

Emergency Hospitalization for Anticoagulation

Emergency IV anticoagulation initiation for a new acute clot event requiring inpatient monitoring.

Emergency Medical Evacuation

Air transport to a vascular or pulmonary center for emergency intervention if local care is inadequate.

What's Not Covered

  • Ongoing anticoagulation therapy management (INR monitoring for warfarin)
  • Routine follow-up for prior DVT/PE
  • DVT resulting from known, continued risk without new acute presentation
  • Planned thrombectomy or IVC filter procedures
💡

Cost Note

DVT history does not affect premiums. Rates are age-based — typically $1.20–$6.00/day depending on age.
