Travel Insurance With Epilepsy

Acute onset coverage for seizure emergencies — including status epilepticus and post-seizure hospitalization.

Compare Plans for Epilepsy

Overview

Epilepsy affects approximately 3.4 million Americans. Travelers with controlled epilepsy can and do travel internationally. Visitor insurance provides coverage for acute seizure emergencies requiring ER care — including status epilepticus, which is a life-threatening neurological emergency. Seizure risk can be elevated by travel-related factors: disrupted sleep, missed medications, and alcohol.

⚠️

Stability Clause Requirement

Plans require epilepsy to be stable for 60–180 days: no new anti-epileptic medications, no dosage changes, no seizures within the stability period on some plans, and no epilepsy-related hospitalizations. Stable use of existing anti-epileptics at unchanged doses is permitted.

What's Covered

Status Epilepticus Emergency

A prolonged seizure or series of seizures requiring emergency IV medication and intensive monitoring — one of the most time-critical neurological emergencies.

Acute Breakthrough Seizure with Hospitalization

A sudden breakthrough seizure (not due to medication non-compliance) requiring emergency evaluation and hospitalization — if the epilepsy was stable pre-departure.

Post-Seizure Emergency Care

Emergency treatment for injuries sustained during a seizure — head trauma, fractures, soft tissue injuries.

Emergency Medical Evacuation

Transport to a neurological center capable of managing acute epileptic emergencies if local care is inadequate.

What's Not Covered

  • Routine epilepsy management, neurologist appointments, or EEG monitoring
  • Anti-epileptic medication prescriptions for ongoing management
  • Seizures caused by medication non-compliance
  • Elective epilepsy surgery or planned procedures
  • Vagal nerve stimulator (VNS) maintenance
💡

Cost Note

Epilepsy does not affect premiums. A 35-year-old with controlled epilepsy pays the same as any 35-year-old — typically $1.00–$1.80/day.
