Acute onset coverage for MS relapses and neurological emergencies while traveling internationally.

Overview

Multiple sclerosis affects approximately 1 million Americans. MS patients can and do travel extensively — but the unpredictable nature of relapse creates real insurance considerations. Visitor insurance provides acute onset coverage for sudden MS relapses requiring emergency treatment, subject to a stability clause.

⚠️

Stability Clause Requirement

Plans require MS to be stable for 60–180 days: no new disease-modifying therapies (DMTs), no relapses or exacerbations, no IV steroid treatment, no new neurological symptoms, and no change in disability status. Ongoing stable DMT use is permitted.

What's Covered

Acute MS Relapse (Emergency Level)

Sudden relapse requiring hospitalization — including acute optic neuritis with hospitalization, acute loss of motor function, or severe exacerbation requiring IV methylprednisolone (IV Solumedrol) as an emergency intervention.

Emergency Neurological Evaluation

Emergency MRI or neurological assessment for sudden acute neurological symptoms requiring immediate evaluation.

Emergency Medical Evacuation

Transport to a neurological center capable of managing acute MS exacerbations if local care is inadequate.

Fall/Injury Coverage

Accidental injuries resulting from MS-related balance issues or sudden loss of coordination are covered as standard emergency medical events.

What's Not Covered

  • Ongoing disease-modifying therapy (Tysabri, Ocrevus, Tecfidera, etc.)
  • Routine neurologist appointments or MS monitoring
  • Physical or occupational therapy for MS management
  • Fatigue management, cognitive rehabilitation, or MS wellness programs
  • Mobility aids and adaptive equipment
💡

Cost Note

MS diagnosis does not affect premiums. A 40-year-old MS patient pays the same as any other 40-year-old — typically $1.30–$2.50/day.
