Travel Insurance Planning: Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need travel insurance before booking a trip?
You don't need insurance before booking, but purchasing within 10–21 days of your first payment (flight, hotel, or tour deposit) gives you the most comprehensive trip cancellation and pre-existing condition coverage. For visitor insurance (parents coming to the USA), you can purchase right up until the day the trip starts.
Does my US health insurance cover me abroad?
In most cases, no. Medicare has virtually no international coverage. Most employer-sponsored and ACA plans also exclude or severely limit coverage outside the United States. International travel medical insurance provides coverage that your domestic plan lacks.
What's the difference between travel insurance and travel medical insurance?
Travel medical insurance covers emergency health care abroad — doctor visits, hospitalization, surgery, and emergency evacuation. Travel insurance (also called trip insurance) covers non-medical losses like trip cancellation, lost luggage, and travel delays. A 'comprehensive' travel insurance plan bundles both.
Do I need travel insurance for domestic travel within the USA?
For domestic US travel, your existing US health insurance typically covers medical emergencies. Trip cancellation insurance can still make sense if you have significant non-refundable costs (especially for cruises, group tours, or international flights booked from the US).
What does travel insurance NOT cover?
Standard travel insurance typically excludes: routine or preventive medical care, pre-existing conditions (unless specifically covered), high-risk activities like skydiving or mountaineering (without an adventure sports rider), acts of war, and cancellations due to pre-existing conditions unless you purchased a waiver. Always read the exclusions section of any plan before buying.
How do I know if I need Schengen insurance?
You need Schengen-specific insurance if you are applying for a Schengen visa — that is, if you're a citizen of a country that requires a visa to enter the EU/Schengen area. US, Canadian, UK, and Australian citizens do not need a Schengen visa (for stays under 90 days) and therefore don't need a specific Schengen insurance certificate, though they may still want travel medical coverage.
